Week 3
The Sisters of Mercy are a great example and reminder of how we should try to live our lives to not only help ourselves but those around us. Someone doesn't have to go to the extreme and try to be a saint in order to be able to help like the Sisters of Mercy. It's the idea that even the smallest contribution helps to make a difference that allows anyone feel apart of it.
Personally I am a volunteer at SIS. It stands for Stay in School and it is a program that helps high school students prepare for the future. It does a variety of things such as helping them with current classes, apply to college, and learn how to present themselves in to the professional job market.
The way the program is set up is that there are students within six community centers that all meet up once a month and focus on the topic for that day that would help them in the future (ex: teamwork, legacy, creativity, networking). On that day the topic is looked at more in depth and there are activities that would help the students understand the importance of that topic.
For example last year in January the topic was Networking and on that day the location was at UIC. The activity that we had set up that day was that the students had to fill out a questionnaire about the university that an average students would have during their first year. This also allowed any students that were seniors to learn more about college life in particular UIC. The students were split into groups and together they had to walk around and ask current UIC students that were stationed around the campus like a scavenger hunt.
That session in particular thought them to use their resources to figure answer the questions as wel las figuring out where to go. There are other session though out the school year (total of 8) that are set up similar to that in which the activity is set up to help them understand the importance of the topic as well as practice using it. By being a part of the program I am able to share my experience as a college student and connect to them in a way that I am closer to their age than most of the other adults that volunteer.
